1 What is Pairing exactly?

The pairing process is a simple but crucial operation. For pairing to be successful one Bluetooth device has to be Discoverable (meaning other Bluetooth devices can discover it) and the other has to be in Discover mode (meaning that it searches for other devices to connect to). Devices are put into these modes by software and menu settings.

2 What PASSKEY or PIN Code do I use?

"I am carrying out the pairing process and I am being asked for a passkey: what passkey or PIN should I use when trying to pair my Bluetooth device with the go blue USB Adaptor or PC Card?"

Most devices such as EZURiO’s Bluetooth products, mobile phones, PCs or PDAs have no fixed Passkey. You are free to choose any characters (up to 16 digits) at the time of Pairing - just ensure you type in the same passkey on both devices. Note, some devices such as Nokia or Ericsson Phones will only accept numerical passkeys.  The Passkey is only required once, so you don't need to remember it. It is used to generate the security key that Bluetooth devices transfer between themselves every time they connect - the more digits you use for your passkey, the more secure that connection will be.

Some devices such as the Nokia 6210 Bluetooth Battery and Bluetooth headsets have a fixed passkey, which you will need to know before you begin the Pairing process.

If you are not sure what your device supports, refer to the device's user manual. For reference, the EZURiO Bluetooth PC Card and USB Adaptor support both numerical and alphabetical Passkeys.

The number of digits that you use for the passkey is related to the security of the link between your devices.  We recommend that you use a minimum of 8 digits if your phone allows.  If you want a really secure connection, use the full 16 digits.

For most devices there is no preset PIN code - choose your own set of numbers and make sure you use the same code at both ends!  You only need to do this once, so you don't need to remember the code.

3 How to do pairing first time every time

1. Make sure the device you're connecting to has Bluetooth turned on and that it is Discoverable - check the manual or see Section 4  to see how

2. On your computer double click on the Bluetooth icon in the taskbar, this is next to the clock and bottom right on the desktop

3. Double click the search for Bluetooth devices icon

4. The device to connect to should appear in the resultant list

5. Right click on the image of the device to connect to and select pair

6. Enter a pin code. This can be any number.  As an example type in 645336539

7. Check the device to connect to and type in the same number, i.e. 645336539

8. If successful a small tick will appear over the device's image

9. Now you’ll be able to connect to the device whenever you like

4 How do I make my device discoverable (it does not have that word in the menu!)?

We’re talking about devices other than your EZURiO Bluetooth adaptor here. Different manufacturers have chosen different ways to describe this setting. Here are some that will help you find what you need:

On newer Sony Ericsson phones (Z600, T610, T630) choose the Visibility option and then select Show phone.

On Motorola phones (V600, V525) choose Setup in the Bluetooth Link menu then select Find Me.

On Palm T2 and T3 devices select Discoverable.

A quick way to pair your PC and another device is to first discover the device using My Bluetooth Places and then right-click on the device’s icon, after that just follow the prompts on your PC and the device.

6 More Pairing questions answered

Pairing allows you to avoid entering access information each time a connection is made between two devices. Paired devices share a unique Link Key, which they exchange each time they connect. Some useful things to know:

• A device you’ve paired with always appears in My Bluetooth Places, even if the device is not turned on or is out of connection range
• Paired devices remain paired even when one of the devices is not switched on
• Paired devices remain paired when a service connection is interrupted or the service stopped
• Paired devices remain paired when one or both devices are rebooted
